Southern Cross Theatre Extension

Project Description

This project encompasses the addition of 2 large operating theatres as well as alterations to the clinical suite at the hospital. Economech developed and detailed the design intent outlined in a performance specification and concept design provided by WSP. The works were completed in two phases over a 9-month period to minimise disruption to the hospital operation.

The new specialist grade hybrid theatres extension works valued around $2 million has been in operation since mid-2017.

The theatres have some of the latest technology in Hoods and C-arm robots. As part of the hospital upgrade, new vacuum plant and generators were incorporated. A new Recovery area and Consulting rooms were part of the second stage of works. New plantrooms were created interfacing with a complex arrangement of existing services.

Project Cost

$2M in mechanical services design and installation.

Challenges Met and Innovations Introduced

Routing services and developing plant spaces around existing services is always challenging but the additional requirement of keeping everything operational due to the type of environment made it even more interesting, particularly for seismic bracing. The large HEPA hoods with integrated lights and pendants were without a doubt the centrepiece of this project.

Track Record and Client Satisfaction

The mechanical services for the project were completed and set into operation on time. Our first job at this site was back in 2012 and to date we are still involved in most of the significant projects completed within the hospital and annex clinics.
