The Springhill Corrections Facility has a variety of different buildings including the visiting entrance, visitors’ rooms, cellblocks, youth residential, self-care unit internal/external, Whare Hui, processing rooms, control rooms, medical centre, isolation rooms, and day wards together with kitchen, toilets and amenities. The mechanical services installed in the buildings included hot water systems were supplied by four boilers and respective pumps sets located in the first floor mechanical plantrooms.

The cells are heated by a low temperature hot water embedded underfloor heating system. The LTHW from a secondary mixing circuit is circulated through the embedded pipework by an individual pump located in the main plant room. Air conditioning to the relevant building was by means of several air handling units, variable refrigerant flow (three or two pipe) and split systems with various fan systems providing ventilation to specific areas including an extensive kitchen fresh air and exhaust system. All systems controls were linked into a common BMS system as was the fire mode and smoke exhaust systems.

The Project:

Spring Hill Corrections Facility is located on a 215 hectare site near Meremere in the Waikato and is one of the country's biggest prisons. It was one of four new prisons that opened between 2005 and 2007 and is designed quite differently to traditional prisons. SHCF is a 650-bed male prison and has been purpose built to meet the rehabilitative needs of prisoners. It accommodates prisoners with low to high-medium security classifications .A highly secure perimeter fence encloses a large open space containing a range of separate buildings for accommodation and services.
